Ethereum Merge Ready - ETH Completes the Final Shadow Fork Before the Transition

Ethereum successfully completed the final shadow fork before the Merge. The last shadow fork occurred days before the expected date of Ethereum's transition to Proof-of-Stake (PoS). Nethermind, an Ethereum research and engineering firm, revealed on Twitter that the network went through the last shadow fork before The Merge.

All Nethermind nodes successfully transitioned to Mainnet-Shadowfork-13 (the final shadowfork before The Merge)!

Ethereum Merge

The Merge is a highly complex process that represents the culmination of many years of research and development. Shadow forks are intended to assist developers in testing synchronization assumptions in order to ensure network safety during irreversible upgrades.

Meanwhile, according to EtherNodes data, 84% of Ethereum nodes are marked as "Merge Ready."

According to current hash rate estimates, the event will take place on September 15th.

What is The Merge?

The Merge denotes the merging of Ethereum's existing execution layer (the Mainnet as we know it today) and the Beacon Chain, its new proof-of-stake consensus layer. It replaces the requirement for energy-intensive mining with staked ETH to secure the network. More scalability, security, and sustainability - a huge step toward accomplishing the Ethereum mission.

It's important to remember that the Beacon Chain was initially distributed independently of Mainnet. The Ethereum Mainnet, with all of its accounts, balances, smart contracts, and blockchain state, is still secured by proof-of-work, while the Beacon Chain uses proof-of-stake. The approaching Merge is when these two systems finally merge and proof-of-stake permanently replaces proof-of-work.

What date is The Merge?

The Merge is expected to be released in Q3/Q4 2022. The client developers are currently working to a soft deadline of September 19th, 2022, but this could change depending on the success of the final testnet merge (Goerli) in mid-August, continued client refinements, and the hash rate of the existing miners continuing to rise predictably. Everyone is working tirelessly to complete The Merge as soon as possible.

Following the merge

This will mark the end of Ethereum's proof-of-work era and usher in a more sustainable, environmentally friendly Ethereum. Learn more about Ethereum's energy usage.

This will also pave the way for additional scalability upgrades not possible with proof-of-work, bringing Ethereum one step closer to the full scale, security, and sustainability outlined in its Ethereum vision.
